THE Word That Sets Us Free
John 8:31–32
Go for the Word — Continuously
Jesus said, “If you continue in My Word, then you are My disciples indeed; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” This is not just a beautiful statement—it is a spiritual law. Jesus ties discipleship, truth, and freedom to one thing: continuing in His Word.
Many people claim to follow Christ, but Jesus Himself says the evidence of a true disciple is a life shaped, fed, and governed by the Word of God.
1. What Is the Word?
The Word of God is not ordinary text. Hebrews 4:12 tells us:
“The Word of God is alive and active, sharper than any double‑edged sword… it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
The Word is:
Alive – it carries God’s breath.
Active – it works inside you.
Sharp – it cuts away what is false.
Discerning – it exposes motives and truth.
The Word is God’s voice in written form, revealing Christ, revealing truth, and revealing the path of life.
2. Why Continuing in the Word Matters
Jesus did not say, “If you hear My Word once.” He said, continue.
Continuing means:
Daily feeding
Daily applying
Daily aligning your life with Scripture
Without this, people easily hold onto distorted versions of truth. Some mix cultural practices, traditions, or personal beliefs with Christianity—yet Scripture clearly warns against consulting the dead or mixing worship.
People do not fall into error because they are evil; they fall because they are uninformed. Only the Word corrects the soul.
3. What the Word Does in a Believer
a. It Purifies
As you continue in the Word, it cuts through your “bone and marrow”—removing sinful habits, exposing hidden attitudes, and shaping your character.
b. It Teaches Fellowship
Scripture teaches us to intercede for one another, not compete or backbite. It forms Christlike community.
c. It Arms You for Spiritual Warfare
The Word reminds you daily that you are in a spiritual battle. It teaches you to “put on Christ” and stand firm.
d. It Reveals Your Identity
Romans says you are more than a conqueror. The Word makes this truth real in your heart.
e. It Guides Your Path
The Psalmist declares:
“Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
When you feel lost, Scripture becomes your compass.
f. It Gives Peace and Assurance
Psalm 91 says God’s truth becomes your shield. The Word stabilizes your emotions, your decisions, and your faith.
4. The Eternal Weight of Truth
This is not a casual matter. Every soul will one day be summoned. If you know the truth before your life expires, that truth will set you free—because truth leads you to Christ, and Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
The Word prepares you for life here and after here.
5. A Call to Personal Introspection
Your pastor cannot continue in the Word for you. Your parents cannot do it for you. Your friends cannot do it for you.
Ask yourself:
Do I continue in His Word, or do I only hear it once a week?
What truth am I living by?
Is my life shaped by Scripture or by culture?
These questions matter while you still have breath.
Conclusion
Jesus says, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” To continue in His Word is to continue in Him. To know His Word is to know truth. To abide in His Word is to walk in freedom.
Let every soul return to the Word—daily, humbly, consistently—until Christ is formed in us.
